Learning Gardens Update

Happy March! Both Daylight Savings Time and the Vernal Equinox begin this month. In my first grade classroom, we will start seedlings under the gro-light to transplant into the Learning Garden come May. It is an exciting time for gardeners, even though we know full well that the chance of snow is with us for awhile yet!

The Learning Gardens Committee has made slow and steady progress towards our third habitat garden, the Water Garden, to be located in the wet area of the school yard. This is our most ambitious garden to date, as it involves the construction of a fairly extensive system of boardwalks and platforms. Dozens of small trees, shrubs, and perennials will be added to the mix of interesting native grasses that are already growing there.

The boardwalk system will be constructed this spring thanks to some very generous donations. Hillside Lumber has donated all the Correct Deck composite decking for the surface of the boardwalk, and the South Portland Lions Club and Saco and Biddeford Savings have both made monetary donations. Contributions from our PTA and Portland Trails will be forth coming. I would also like to thank the Skillin School families and staff who supported the SunriseGuide fundraiser we had back in December.

Mrs. Cyr accepts a donation from Melanie Lee, Branch Manager of Saco and Biddeford Savings Bank for the Learning Garden Projects.

I am actively seeking volunteers to help construct the boardwalk system this spring. Forty-two 4x8’ sections will be constructed off-site, and then transported and installed on-site. Please contact me to sign-up, whether you’re interested in helping out “for the duration,” or only for a few hours. We will need many hands to complete this project.

Other garden news: composting at school has continued throughout the winter. Many thanks to our “compost queen,” Cynde Morse, and her 5 th grade helpers and other volunteers for taking out the compost in all sorts of weather. We may well have some “black gold” to add to the Learning Gardens this summer!

Also, the Afterschool Garden Club, open to 3-5 graders, will start up again at the end of April. It meets once a week for an hour. If you would like to help run Garden Club, just let me know. I need at least two adults every week.

That’s all for now. Remember to give your houseplants a cool shower – they will thank you for it!

Sincerely,
Anne Cyr
