Skillin Elementary School Music Department

John Rimkunas, Music Teacher

Bells have been ringing in the music room! The fourth grade has been working hard learning to play the handbells purchased for our school by the South Portland Music Boosters, and will be presenting a concert later this fall featuring such pieces as “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean,” “Sweet Betsy from Pike,” and “America, the Beautiful.” It should be a wonderful event.

Our grade five chorus meets once a week to prepare pieces for our All City Chorus Concert, which will be January 17 th at 7:00 PM at the South Portland

High School Auditorium. They are sounding great, learning a great deal about making choral music, and having fun!

In grade 3 we are currently learning about Beethoven, but will soon be moving on to Tchaikovsky to prepare for our field trip to see “Backstage at the Nutcracker” (sponsored for us by our PTA – Thank you!). Second grade is learning the basics of music notation, and everyone is working on singing skills, and dancing and listening.
